Chelsea midfielder Jorginho has become a target for the club’s fans after a video emerged of his lacklustre attempts to track Raheem Sterling during Sunday’s thrashing at the hands of Manchester City.

The Blues suffered their worst defeat in 26 years at the Etihad, Sergio Aguero scoring a hat-trick in a game where his side acquired a four-goal lead after just 25 minutes.

None of Maurizio Sarri’s men did themselves any justice on the day but Jorginho has come in for further criticism after the video of his half-hearted defensive efforts did the rounds on social media.

The clip shows Sterling charging through the centre of midfield as the Sky Blues turned defence into attack, Jorginho never moving out of jogging speed.

The Italian looks content to watch on as Sterling makes his way toward the box before teeing up Gabriel Jesus for an effort on goal.

And Chelsea fans were not impressed, taking to Twitter to express their frustration with their new signing.

‘Who else saw Jorginho letting Sterling go past him without even trying?’ asked one while another labelled him a ‘glorified Danny Drinkwater’.

Another supporter saw the incident as a microcosm of the player’s shortcomings, writing: ‘he can’t run, can’t defend, can’t tackle but can pass backwards’.

Jorginho has failed to live up to expectations since his £50m move from Napoli in the summer, failing to record a goal or an assist since netting from the penalty spot on the opening day of the season.

BT Sport pundit Rio Ferdinand was highly critical of the 27-year-old following last month’s loss at Arsenal.

‘Jorginho’s someone who sets the tempo of a game,’ he said. ‘You get the ball into him through the middle third of the pitch, he’s very good.

‘[But] How many assists has he got this season? Around 2,000 passes, no assists.

‘He’s not a great defender. Once a game gets like this against the big teams, he gets overrun in midfield.

‘He can’t run. So he doesn’t give you anything defensively, and he doesn’t give you anything up the other end of the pitch.’
