Phil Foden was among the Manchester City stars who returned to training following their convincing 7-0 FA Cup third round win over Rotherham on Sunday.

The academy graduate scored his first goal at the Etihad in victory, and will be hoping for another run-out when the Premier League champions host Burton Albion in the Carabao Cup semi-final on Wednesday.

Foden was joined in the session by fellow FA Cup goalscorer Leroy Sane, as well as several senior players rested for the clash, including midfield lynchpin Fernandino.

Pep Guardiola watched on as his charges were put through their paces in a series of drills at the club’s state-of-the-art training ground.

He will have several selection decisions to make before his side take on a second successive League One side in Burton.

Guardiola’s side beat Oxford – with Foden starring – before defeating Fulham and then Leicester on penalties to reach this stage.

The Spaniard will be keen to retain the trophy he claimed in 2018 with an emphatic 3-0 win over Arsenal in the final at Wembley.

Sergio Aguero, Vincent Kompany and David Silva were on target that day to bring Guardiola his first silverware in England.

London rivals Tottenham and Chelsea face off in the other semi-final, on Tuesday, with both return legs scheduled for Tuesday, January 22.

The semi-final offers Guardiola the chance to record a fourth straight win after successive defeats to Crystal Palace and Leicester had threatened to derail their season.

Victory over League One Rotherham – with Raheem Sterling, Nicolas Otamendi, Gabriel Jesus and Riyad Mahrez also on target – followed a crucial 2-1 success at home to Premier League title rivals Liverpool.

The win, which saw Sergio Aguero and Leroy Sane strike either side Roberto Firmino’s leveller, closed the gap at the top to four points after 21 games.

Guardiola is desperate to retain the crown his side won last year, while Jurgen Klopp is still hunting a first trophy as Liverpool boss.
