Paul Scholes has questioned whether Ander Herrera is good enough to play for Manchester United after he misplaced ‘a simple ball’ during the draw with Southampton on Saturday.

The Spanish midfielder failed to direct a relatively simple pass towards team-mate Paul Pogba during the clash at St Mary’s as United came from two goals down to rescue a 2-2 draw.

Scholes, who played more than 700 matches for the Red Devils in a stunning career, admitted someone playing in the heart of midfield for United should have been able to complete the pass.

‘You have to question the quality of the player,’ Scholes said during BT Sport‘s coverage of Manchester United’s draw with Arsenal on Wednesday night.

‘Rio (Ferdinand) asked the question there when he said: “Is Ander Herrera capable of playing that ball to Pogba?” Now, he’s in 15-20 yards of space, it’s probably a 30-yard ball – a simple ball – if he’s not good enough to play that ball then he shouldn’t be at this club.’

Ferdinand also stuck the knife in and attributed the error to the players lacking confidence under manager Jose Mourinho.

He added: ‘It is an easy ball and when you hear Paul Scholes say that… he was a player who could put the ball on a sixpence from anywhere on the pitch, but when you look at that pass it’s not a difficult ball to play. I think it’s confidence.’

Mourinho saw his under-pressure side rescue a point against in-form Arsenal at Old Trafford on Wednesday having fallen behind twice.

United find themselves in a difficult moment as they sit eight points off Chelsea in fourth, and 18 behind league leaders Manchester City.

They welcome Claudio Ranieri’s Fulham side to Old Trafford this weekend with the hosts desperate for just a seventh Premier League win of the season.
