Sevilla are stepping up their attempts to sign Alvaro Morata from Chelsea in the January transfer window.

The player’s agent Juanma Lopez was in Sevilla on Monday and held talks with the club’s director of football Joaquin Caparros.

The Spanish club believe Morata wants the move to happen and Sevilla coach Pablo Machin is keen to bring in the Spain international after loaning striker Luis Muriel to Fiorentina at the start of the year.

MORATA THIS SEASON

Appearances: 24

Goals: 9

Assists: 0

Bookings: 5

The Spain striker has endured a crisis of confidence this season — before his FA Cup brace on Saturday he had scored just seven times in 23 appearances.

Morata’s lack of consistent goals has led to much criticism and Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola, who netted 70 times for the club during his time there as a player, told the Spaniard in no uncertain terms to deal with the pressure better

Zola was asked whether he had sympathy for Morata, owing to the pressure he was feeling, and responded: ‘No. It should be a motivational thing. You are at Chelsea. You’re not playing for Southampton or Brighton, with all due respect for those clubs.

‘People expect a lot from the No 9 of Chelsea. This is normal and Alvaro has to get used to it.

‘If he goes to another big club, it’s going to be the same. There is no way you can avoid your responsibilities. It’s part of your job and the better you can handle those situations, the better you’re going to be.

‘I know he feels he doesn’t score enough and he feels a lot of responsibility on that. He has to learn to leave everything behind because these are only burdens you take on the pitch and they won’t help you to perform better.’

Morata is understood to be keen on a move back to La Liga but he would not have it easy becoming a Sevilla regular.

Their front two of Wissam Ben Yedder and Andre Silva have scored eight goals each in the league so far this season.

Sevilla earned a credible 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid in the first game back after the winter break on Saturday.

The result leaves Sevilla in third place in La Liga, seven points behind table toppers Barcelona.
